The Art of Form, Intention & Internal Power
Emei Xing Yi Quan is more than just another branch of Xing Yi—it is a living expression of internal martial philosophy rooted in the sacred traditions of Mount Emei. Known as “Form-Intention Boxing,” Emei Xing Yi Quan integrates the clarity and precision of classical Xing Yi with the depth of Taoist energy practices cultivated in the Emei Mountain temples. Where some martial systems rely heavily on brute strength or athletic performance, this art emphasizes the fusion of structure, breath, and awareness, training practitioners to unify body, mind, and spirit into a seamless expression of power.
Under the guidance of Grandmaster Shou-Yu Liang and Master Helen Liang, Emei Xing Yi Quan has been preserved and taught as both a system of effective combat training and a pathway of holistic development. Students learn not only how to strike, step, and defend, but also how to generate and circulate internal energy (Qi), balance Yin and Yang within the body, and develop the resilience needed for a lifetime of martial and personal growth. The emphasis on whole-body integration means that every strike becomes a manifestation of intention, and every movement reinforces structural alignment, fluid mobility, and inner stillness.
What makes Emei Xing Yi Quan unique is its Taoist foundation. While traditional Xing Yi is often categorized among the “Five Major Internal Styles,” the Emei branch draws upon centuries of spiritual cultivation practiced by monks and hermits on Mount Emei. Here, martial techniques were never separated from healing, meditation, or energy work. To train Emei Xing Yi Quan is to participate in this continuum: every fist embodies not just the force of combat, but the flow of the five elements, the rhythm of animal archetypes, and the subtle currents of internal alchemy. This makes it a rare treasure among internal arts, offering not only martial prowess but also a complete health and longevity practice.
For modern practitioners, Emei Xing Yi Quan provides a clear roadmap for transformation. Its training methods cultivate physical conditioning—strengthening tendons, bones, and fascia—while simultaneously building mental clarity and emotional balance. Students quickly discover that the same spiraling steps and focused strikes that once served warriors on the battlefield now serve equally well for restoring posture, preventing injury, and maintaining vitality in daily life. The art demands discipline, yet rewards perseverance with a type of strength that is as adaptable as water: firm when necessary, soft when required.
Perhaps most importantly, Emei Xing Yi Quan offers a way to embody intention in every aspect of life. Its teaching that “the mind leads the body, and the body expresses the mind” extends far beyond the training hall. In combat, it means decisive action without hesitation. In health, it means channeling awareness to heal and restore. In life, it means aligning choices, movements, and breath with purpose. Practitioners discover that Emei Xing Yi Quan is not only a martial art, but also a philosophy of living fully, with courage, clarity, and compassion.
At Agniyana, this art is presented as both a discipline and a path of mastery. Students are invited to step into a tradition that has survived centuries of change while remaining true to its essence. Whether your goal is to enhance martial skills, improve health, or embark on a deeper journey of self-discovery, Emei Xing Yi Quan provides the structure and guidance you need. By training in this system, you become part of a lineage that honors the wisdom of the past while forging strength and resilience for the future.
Lineage & Training
My Xingyiquan journey is deeply influenced by:
Grandmaster Shou-Yu Liang: A renowned martial artist with over 45 years of experience, Grandmaster Liang has mastered various Chinese martial arts, including Xingyiquan, Taijiquan, Baguazhang, and Qigong. His Emei Xingyiquan system emphasizes internal development, fluid movements, and practical applications.
Master Helen Liang: A respected teacher and practitioner, Master Liang brings a modern approach to Emei Xingyiquan, emphasizing its health benefits and internal cultivation aspects.
Deng Ming-Dao: An esteemed author and teacher of Taoist internal arts, Deng Ming-Dao has studied Xingyiquan, Baguazhang, and Taijiquan, integrating these practices with Taoist philosophy and meditation.
Through their guidance, I’ve embraced the Emei Xingyiquan system, which combines the internal strength of Xingyiquan with the spiritual depth of Emei martial arts.
What You'll Learn
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN EMEI XING YI QUAN
Training in Emei Xing Yi Quan at Agniyana develops both external skill and internal mastery. Students can expect to build:
San Ti Shi (Three-Body Posture): The foundational stance of Xing Yi. This simple yet profound posture teaches alignment, rooted stability, and the ability to generate whole-body force.
Five Element Fists (Wu Xing Quan): Movements based on Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. Each element embodies distinct qualities—rising, splitting, drilling, pounding, or crossing—that train adaptability, combat strategy, and internal power.
Twelve Animal Forms (Shi Er Xing): Lessons drawn from animals such as the tiger, dragon, and eagle. These forms cultivate agility, ferocity, and fluid changes in intent.
Power Development: Xing Yi emphasizes forward-driving energy. Students learn to issue explosive force through structure, breath, and intention rather than brute strength.
Combat Applications: Beyond forms, Xing Yi techniques translate directly into practical defense. Joint locks, evasive maneuvers, and striking methods are taught alongside the forms to develop a complete martial art.
Weapons Integration: Xing Yi’s spear roots come alive in traditional weapons practice. Students are introduced to staff, spear, and sword methods that extend Xing Yi’s internal principles into armed training.
Internal Cultivation: Breathing, standing meditation, and energy practices harmonize the nervous system and cultivate resilience, clarity, and inner calm.
Together, these practices build a martial artist who is powerful without rigidity, mobile without instability, and mindful without hesitation. Xing Yi Quan is not just a set of techniques—it is a way of embodying strength, intention, and flow.
A Path of Internal Mastery
